Betty a La Mode

Ooh La La!

Sorry for the lateness of this post, been dealing with an awful cough and spent Thursday travelling back from University! Finally got to watch the episode last night….

Let me start out by saying this, musicals are really not my thing. I enjoyed the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer Musical’ but that’s about it. But now, after seeing ‘Something Wicked…’, I think I am converted! I think I can safely say this was the best episode of the season so far, it really had me gripped from start to finish. And the ending, my mouth was on the floor! Anyway, enough of my whittering, as well as Betty and Henry getting it ooooooooooon, Hilda lied about her job, Marc was embarassed by his boyfriend, Daniel disapproved of Betty’s actions and Wilhelmina had to reshuffle her wedding plans. Was it just me, or did anyone else feel really sorry for good ol’ Willi? Kinda glad Nico isn’t coming back though, her character was pretty boring.

For those who want to refresh their memory, watch the video summary below:

Who ever said Betty was Ugly?! America is covergirl for ‘Marie Claire’ UK this month and she is looking absolutely stunning on the front cover. Have a look at the HQ cover picture below and read a few snippets from her interview. I have just bought my copy [that’s the second girl’s magazine I have bought in a month!], so be sure to pick up yours too! You can find more of the article on the official website, .

America Ferrera Marie Claire Magazine Cover

‘It feels good to be a part of a show that means more to people than just entertainment,’ she says, ‘and which confronts a lot of issues,
like the portrayal of a Latin family with a father struggling for citizenship. Many people kind of see it as a pioneer show for their cause. Ugly Betty addresses these serious issues with humour, and that’s the easiest way to make people listen as opposed to being preachy and
shoving it down their throats.’

Wanna know something MAJOR? The ‘Posh’ episode is less than a week away! Seems like so long ago that news of her appearing started circulating and now it’s finally here. Check out the clip below of Vicky’s ‘acting abilities’ and let me know what you think of it!

I have been in contact with the official ABC store and I have some exciting news for all of you. We are working together to bring you the latest news on updates to the store, right here on Betty a La Mode. Also, we will be running a competition in the following weeks where you can get your hands on some official Betty merchandise! As well as that, the store wants to hear from YOU. What do you want to see in the store? An Ugly Betty teapot? Ugly Betty underwear? Contact me here and I’ll be submitting all of your ideas straight to the store. I myself have mentioned the fact that there is no clothing for male Ugly Betty fans, so hopefully we will see some new mansize additions soon, haha!

In the meantime, why not check out the current items for sale?

You could become the office fashionista with your very own ‘Mode’ bag and travel cup and could complete the look with the ‘Viva La Betty’ T-Shirt. Oh and don’t forget to stick up your official poster, after marking down your next glitzy party on your Ugly Betty calendar. Click the above images to go to their respective pages.

Our sister site, is hotting up in time for Winter, with the new ‘Magazine Wars’ starting. Here’s the description from the site about what it’s all about:

‘Magazine Wars is a new game here at Mode Magazine that allows you to win some amazing prizes, as well as trying to win points for your team (magazine) at the same time! Every few weeks the staff here at Mode Magazine will post a competition within the main forum. These are TEAM events, and you must work within your team in order to make points for your magazine. After each event the team with the most points will be declared the winners and will be given a shiny new prize or more points.’

So whether you’re a whizz at Photoshop, have a knack for writing or just want to join in on all the fun, check it out on the forums.

On the subject of the forums, they are a wonderful place to talk about the latest news reported here with fellow Ugly Betty fans. If you haven’t already, get yourself over there!

Ooooohohoh! Before I go, I FINALLY got my Ugly Betty baseball, adorned with the cast’s signatures. It’s sitting up in my bedroom right now, hehe. It is BETTYFUL! Watch out for the next update for pictures :)

Last night, Episode 5 ‘A League of Their Own’ finally made it’s way onto our screens. Season 2 has really lived up to my expectations and this episode was no different. Hilda’s Cemetery club, the whole Betty / Henry situation and Christina’s underwear fitting session all added up to another great hour of Bettyness! On the subject of Christina, looks like the ball has started rolling with her husband storyline. I hope this means we see a bit more of her on our screens, she always seem to have some of the best lines.

Ashley Jensen Interview

Christina, or should I say Ashley Jensen, was Becki & Michael’s special guest this week for the official podcast. I have sorted out the server and have now updated the podcasts section with ALL the podcasts, from the first to the last. If you’ve never listened to them before, you are really missing out! They are absolutely hilarious, and great for the latest gossip. So….

In the last bit of Ashley related news before I move on, she recently completed a Q&A with Variety magazine, which you can read online here. Here’s a snippet to whet your appetite..

What book do you hope never gets adapted?
“Roget’s Thesauraus,” ‘cos it would be boring.

Last film I saw:
“The Bourne Ultimatum”

Who do you think is the best actor/actress in Hollywood at the moment?
Jeremy Piven and Maggie Gyllenhaall.

I have also updated the Fanmade Video Gallery, [which can be found in the Interact section. Don’t forget to send me links to your favorite videos!] with the AMAZING new video from Ugly Betty video master, Manny! A few months ago he posted the ‘Ugly Betty Mega Mix’ and has now followed it up with ‘Ugly Liar’ featuring Betty & WIlhelmina as Shakira & Beyonce. They are truly great, so be sure to check it out. I am not the only fan though, his original video was enjoyed so much by the Ugly Betty studio, it managed to get him a visit to the set! [Still VERY jealous about that, by the way! Haha!] Manny himself will let you in to ALL the details here, exclusively on Betty a la Mode in the future.

Remember the news that death will be ‘enveloping’ a series regular? Well, after myself and others wondering if this means the actual character or someone related to them, our affiliate TV Guide clears it up for us.

Question: The stench of death is going to envelop someone on Ugly Betty?! Does that mean a main character’s going to die, or is it someone a main character knows? —Caitlin

Ausiello: A series regular will die before the year is out.

Oh. My. Goodness! Who do you think it’ll be? My bets are on Bradford. His story arc has kinda ended and we rarely see him anyway. I think there would be an outrage if Marc got hit by a bus, or Amanda fell off a cliff anyway! We’ll see what happens….

Eric Mabius Nature of the Beast

Did you catch Eric starring in ABC’s ‘Nature of the Beast’ last weekend? Sadly I didn’t [due to living in the UK!], so was it any good? However good it was, it meant Eric got an interview with which is always good to hear! As well as the movie, he speaks quite a lot about Ugly Betty, which you can read here >>> See an excerpt below… Just like Daniel Meade. Sometimes he’s helping Betty or reconciling family relationships, then sometimes he’s… a cad.
Mabius: Which is why I have such a good time playing him. He’s doing his best but he’s falling short in a lot of respects. And I feel like I have a dream job to that extent because I’m not going to be stuck playing a cop looking at gruesome murder scenes for X number of years. I get to do broad comedy, drama, romance and slapstick…. It’s just amazing, it really is. Lately it seems Daniel has turned over a new leaf of responsibility. Is that going to continue?
Mabius: What the writers always achieve is an unrealistic world to a great extent, but the interactions — the people — aren’t. As in life, we take one step forward and 10 steps back. I mean, I think he’s going to grow up a lot but he’s not going to grow up too much.

America has recently been quoted talking about her, and other’s, ‘curvy’ fugures.

America Ferrera, the star of the TV series “Ugly Betty”, says she is curvy but doesn’t like the term being used to describe women in Hollywood.

“There’s just way too much attention placed on the way we look. I think it’s hilarious when people call Jessica Alba or Eva Longoria curvy. Come on – they’re not curvy. I’m curvy,” she was quoted as saying by

She added: “What is normal now? Is it normal to be size zero? Starving yourself is not beautiful. I’ve been really lucky. Playing Betty has prepared me to be exactly who I am and not to change. If I’ve gained a pound or lost a pound, or have food in my teeth, it all works for the show.”

I totally agree, Eva is a beautiful woman, but definitely not curvy. Nice to hear ‘Betty’ has given her such a good outlook on her looks :)

Promo pictures for Episode 9, ‘Giving Up The Ghost’ have been released, and by the looks of things, it’ll be one of the Christmas episodes. ‘Lose The Boss’ was one of my favourite episodes of the first season so hopefully this will be just as good.

I recently bought the UK gossip magazine Heat for the interview with Mark Indelicato, and have uploaded the scans for you to enjoy. These can be found in Betty a La Mode’s new gallery which was created in collaboration with our sister site, As always, please respect the fact that I purchased the magazine and then spent literally hours scanning and editing the images, and not pass them off as your own! Click the image below to access the full set. Enjoy…

Lastly, [Thankfully! This post has taken me hours!] here’s a lovely picture of Becki from the Hollywood Fashion Show. Becki always looks lovely at these kind of events and this is no exception. Click the image to access the full gallery.

Four episodes in, less than twenty to go. Sounds strange after waiting so long for the second season to start! ‘Grin And Bear It’ had some very funny moments in my opinion, Pucquito the talking bear, the Daniel ‘Thumbs Up’ montage & Marc’s realisation that everything is ‘DOOMED’! With all the fun though, came the news that Henry really is the father of Charlie’s baby. After reading an article a few weeks ago saying how predictable Ugly Betty had become, I did NOT see this one coming. Is this the end for Henry & Betty?

Michael Urie & Becki Newton Article

A new interview with Michael & Becki has been published, best ‘frenemies’ from the show. The article describes how has compared the duo to ‘Will & Grace’s Jack & Karen [which I have often thought myself]. It also reveals that the American Music Awards want them to appear “in character” backstage. That sounds great, I hope that comes true! Check out the full article here >>>

Ooh, I forgot to say last time, but in the previous podcast with Eric Mabius, Becki reveals that she is going to be cover girl for the UK magazine ‘Esquire’. I will definately be purchasing a copy, so expect some scans very soon!

TV Guide let a ‘nasty’ bit of information slip out in their recent TV blog, revealing that someone might be for the chop in Ugly Betty!

Question: Ugly Betty scoop please! — Sandy

Ausiello: You smell that? It’s the stench of death, and it’s about to envelop a Betty series regular. And sooner rather than later.

The way that is worded though does not mean that one of the cast regulars is going to die, it may be someone close to them. Who could it be?

More promo pictures have been released, this time for Episode 8, ‘I See Me, I.C.U’

Haha! Looks like another great episode to look forward to!

Kirstie Allie & John Travolta have both been rumoured to appear on the show…

It is reported that Kirstie Alley is trying to persuade her ‘Look Who’s Talking’ co-star John Travolta to join her in an upcoming episode of ‘Ugly Betty’.

Variety reports that Alley has been linked to an ‘Ugly Betty’ guest role as a no-nonsense modelling agent who doesn’t hold back when dealing with her young clients.

And ‘Golden Girl’ Betty White has been confirmed! This is not the first time Betty has been to Ugly Betty land, as in April she appeared as our Betty in ‘Ugly Betty White’ for the TV Land Awards! [So many Betty’s in one sentence!] Have a look at this great picture:

Ugly Betty White

Sounds good, the way this is going, they’ll be a new guest star every week!

Posh Spice has been telling the UK press about what a great time she had filming Ugly Betty. She also lets slip about her big entrance, check it out:

“It was the most fun ever,” she’s quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying.

“The director just told me to play myself. I said, ‘The real me or the Posh me?’ He said, ‘I want the Posh one’, so I just played to it.

“Wilhelmina’s standing there in her wedding dress and I burst through a curtain shouting, ‘It’s major!’ My dress is so much more fabulous than hers – the bridesmaid has upstaged her outfit. You should see the look on her face. It was a brilliant thing to do.”

I think that’s it for now, check back later for more updates!

I am so sorry for the delay in this post. This whole weekend has been a pretty crazy time, so I didn’t have a chance to post here earlier. I did manage to finally sort out the ‘Episodes’ section though, with the implementation of a new display and colour scheme.

The problem with leaving such a large gap between posts means the next one is jam packed full of information! Saying that, I better get on with it…

Kim Cattrall

Ugly Betty almost had a ‘Sexy’ guest star join the cast recently, but sadly Kim Cattrall said she didn’t feel ‘it was really her’

The 51-year-old has only made fleeting appearances on the small screen since Sex And The City ended in 2004, but she is still determined to be choosy about what roles she takes on.

Cattrall says, “I turned down Ugly Betty. It’s a fun show, but I don’t regret it. I didn’t really think it was me.”

I’m disappointed about that, I think Kim would have been great on the show. We can’t complain though, we have a load of other guest stars to look forward to instead!

Another week passed, another episode. Amazing, as always, so relive it with this video summary below:

Promo pics for Posh’s episode, ‘A Nice Day For A Posh Wedding’ have been released as well as the pictures for Episode 6, ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’. First up, Episode 6:

Betty and Henry continue their illicit romance and plan a secret date to “Wicked,” but things don’t go as planned when Daniel, thinking she’s dating Gio (Freddy Rodriguez), gifts her with tickets for the two of them instead – tickets which Gio refuses to give up. Meanwhile, Daniel woos an important advertiser (guest star Marlo Thomas), a lady with a penchant for younger men

And now, here’s the promo pictures for Episode 7, ‘A Nice Day For A Posh Wedding’

As Wilhelmina prepares for her big day, all is not quiet on the Mode front when she realizes her fabulous maid of honor, Victoria Beckham (guest starring as herself), is stealing her thunder. Meanwhile, Betty is wracked with guilt about her secret pact with Wilhelmina and about not telling Daniel that his future step-mom is dallying with her bodyguard (guest star Rick Fox). At the Suarez house, Ignacio prepares for his big day – becoming a U.S. citizen – but when Betty moves in with new love Henry, it puts a major strain on father/daughter relations

I seriously cannot wait! This season is going to be great, hehe!

Now for a few interviews with the cast, the first is with Christopher Gorham, who we all know as ‘Henry’. In his talk with the New York Post her reveals a bit about the upcoming musical episode:

Q: Are you ready for “Ugly Betty’s” Valentine’s Day musical episode?

A: I sang a ton in high school, I was in all the singing groups, so it’s going to be fine. This is the perfect cast to do it with – I think everyone sings except for Eric Mabius [Mode editor Daniel Meade]. At least right now, there’s going to be a huge dance number at the end too.

Ah ha! I don’t know about you, but I had no idea it was Valentine’s Day themed. That also tells us that the episode will not be until next year which is a shame, February is so far away! I hope Eric manages to squeeze out a few notes, as long as he doesn’t sound like how Gio did on Thursday’s episode, haha! Read the full interview here >>>

Secondly, Michael got grilled by Tv Guide about his job & love life

TV Guide: What do you and your character, Marc St. James, have in common?

Michael Urie: I love my job and he loves his job. But I’m not fashionable or mean. Marc and Amanda are pretty much Michael and Becki [Newton] — we’re goofy like that.

Check out the full interview here >>>

Speaking of, I am proud to announce that Betty a la Mode is now officially linked with the site [thanks to the lovely Rachelle :)], with a time counter counting down until the next episode, video of Behind the Scenes of Ugly Betty and episode recaps, is the perfect place to catch up with your Bettyness [after Betty a la Mode, of course!]

A new podcast has been released, this time featuring Eric Mabius. This is officially my favourite podcast, their British accents are hilarious [you’ll see what I mean!]. My hosting server is being a bit of a pain at the moment, so check it out on iTunes in the meantime. I’ll aim to be uploading it here very soon.

That was a mother of a post! next time, I promoise not to leave it so long :) Enjoy!

Eric Mabius

A new interview with Eric has surfaced onto the internet which I have put onto the BALM YouTube channel. Check it out, he talks about his new found fame and his European Ugly Betty promo tour.

Not long now till Episode 3, ‘Betty’s Wait Problem’, and to keep you going until Thursday check out this promo [thanks to Instant-Connection] and ‘Sneak Peek’ clip! The ‘Sneak Peek’ is hilarious!

‘Mode Girl’ Promo Clip

Looks like Michael’s been taking a beating…

Victoria Beckham recently shot a guest stint on Ugly Betty in which she plays a bridesmaid at the wedding of witchy editor Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams). Urie, who plays Marc St. James on the show, says Beckham’s three sons with soccer superstar hubby David Beckham were on set for a scene in which Williams kicks Urie.

The Beckham offspring—Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz—asked Urie to show them how Williams kicked him without hurting him.

“So, I showed them how to fake kick someone,” Urie said at the Outfest Legacy Project’s Legacy Awards at the DGA on Thursday. “Then they proceeded to fake kick me. These are soccer spawn, and they could kick—and they didn’t always miss! I spent about a half hour getting kicked by Beckham spawn!” [Read the full article here >>>]

Haha! Hope he isn’t too battered and bruised

Another promo picture has been released showing Justin’s GIRLFRIEND! Looks like after last week’s episode, with the shopkeeper saying how Justin must be just like his dad, he’s going to try and make himself a bit more boyish. First choosing the basketball from Santos’s things and now a girlfriend… I can’t wait to see what’s coming up with Justin.

Justin & Girlfriend

Also, the press release for the episode gives us a bit more of an insight into what’s coming up in Episode 5, ‘A League of Their Own’:

Much to Henry’s distress, Betty tries internet dating and gets asked out on a bowling date. Meanwhile Marc finds himself attracted to someone who isn’t his type, chubby but charming photographer Cliff (David Blue). On the home front, Daniel and Alexis steel themselves for a “family” dinner with step-mom-to-be Wilhelmina, and Hilda, lost in her own world, doesn’t notice that Justin is ditching school and running with the wrong crowd.

To finish off, here’s a few articles related to the UB world, which I found interesting: : Ugly Betty : Subversively Flamboyant? [Read full article here >>>]

“Gay characters are not unheard of in American drama, but Ugly Betty went a stage further by introducing a friendship between the flamboyant gay fashion editor Marc St James (Michael Urie) and Justin, Betty’s 12-year-old brother (Mark Indelicato), who is clearly (but not explicitly) struggling with his sexuality.

‘It’s a relationship we’ve never seen before on television,’ says Urie. ‘We’ve seen what America is willing to accept with a gay man in a couple, but we’ve never seen a positive relationship with a young child before.’ One of the show’s creators, Silvio Horta, is gay and says that, as Justin ages, he will experience ‘the journey’. ‘I see myself in him. Growing up, I certainly felt like an outsider at times. But there is this sweet innocence in Justin that sees the positive.”

The Huffington Post: The Fashion Industry Thinks We’re Stupid: Ugly Betty, Britney, and Beauty [Read full article here >>>]

The recent appearance of Ugly Betty actress, America Ferrera, on the covers of fashion magazines — Cosmopolitan (February 2007), W (May 2007) and, most recently, Glamour (October 2007) — makes my brain hurt.

The show revolves around the hypocrisy of the fashion industry. Betty is (relatively speaking) ugly and lovable. The take-away message: You are more than your looks. Yet all three covers proudly and loudly announce that America Ferrera is, in fact, beautiful. Why bend-over-backwards to make Betty a bombshell after all? Is the fashion industry scared?

Digital Spy: Fans think ‘Ugly Betty’ is real

Ugly Betty star America Ferrera has revealed that fans think her character in the hit US series really exists.

The 23-year-old said she is inundated with letters from viewers asking how she finds working for the show’s fictional magazine Mode.

She told Heat: “The line gets blurred. You just have to deal with that every now and then and be safe and be careful. I try to keep as low-key as I can.”

What did you think then? Personally, I think ‘Family Affair’ was even better than the premiere, with a lot more laugh out loud moments. One scene which had me in stitches was when Marc was on the roof behind Betty with the ‘Thunder Sheet’! Oh my goodness, I was almost in tears, haha! Crazed Wilhelmina on the roof was also a highlight! Saying that though, it wasn’t just all about the comedy, the last scene with Ignacio and his whole storyline in general, shines a light on a topic which needs to be brought forward and into the public eye. I am really interested in where the writers will be taking Ignacio in this season.

As for the ratings:

As expected, all shows lost some of their season premiere audience. ABC’s “Ugly Betty” for instance pulled in 9.78 million (last week the show scored over 11 million viewers).

Betty’s losses are however more drastic on year-to-year basis (the show averaged 14.26 million viewers on a comparable Thursday last year). I certainly hope the decline stops there, or ‘Betty’ may also be in trouble.

No! Surely Betty will be able to survive?!

Video recap of Episode 2, ‘Family / Affair’ iTunes Download Button

Last night, the 2nd Season premiered in the UK. Although it’s only been a week, it seems like ages since the season started in the US, don’t you think? Sadly, I missed the premiere as I was busy essay writing [damn university!], but I hope those that watched it enjoyed it! Don’t forget, with iTunes now offering TV downloads in the UK also, you can now download last night’s episode on iTunes now. Just click the button to the right to be taken to the download page.

Promo pictures for the 5th episode of the new season, ‘A League of Their Own’ have been released, and you know how excited new promo pictures make me! […just realised how wrong that sounds, haha!]. Check them out, I’m interested to see what the old ladies are doing in the Suarez house…

The new season has caused a lot of people to share their opinions & reviews on Ugly Betty, so check some of these out here, and see if you agree with them:

This one didn’t enjoy ‘Family / Affair’! Were they watching a different version to me?!

This one gives a bit of ‘tongue-in-cheek’ advice to the creators of Ugly Betty

And, the UK’s Mirror newspaper has some god things to say about the premiere:

There’s just one word to describe the start of series two: wow!

Series one ended with so many cliffhangers that Betty has to literally run through this episode to tie up all the loose ends.

Just to remind you: Hilda’s fiance was shot; Daniel and Alexis were in a car smash; Betty faced losing Henry; and Amanda learned that Fey Sommers was her real mother.

Tonight starts with Betty starring in her very own telenovela. But as well as all the camp and colourful intrigue that we’ve come to expect – including Justin giving Mode’s fashionistas a run for their money, and Amanda’s mad attempts to get a DNA sample from Bradford – the storyline featuring Hilda will be, for many fans, the high point of the show so far.

Plus, there’s a hilarious rendezvous between Wilhelmina and Mode owner Claire — who is busted out of prison and is now a fugitive from fashion.

“Meet me at the Vaux Bridge in Central Park,” she hisses down the phone to Wilhelmina.

“I’ll be dressed as a nun… or a cat. I haven’t decided yet.”

Congratulations to America for being voted ‘Hispanic Woman of the Year’. What a great honour, she deserves it!

Ugly Betty star America Ferrera has been named Hispanic Woman of the Year.

The actress will receive an award for her achievements at the Hispanic Women in Entertainment breakfast at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel next week.

The event, which will honour the 25 most powerful Hispanic women in film, television and music, is being organised by US publications Billboard and the Hollywood Reporter.

Publisher John Kilcullen explained: “[Ferrera] is a leader for all women, but especially those in the Hispanic community. [She is] dedicated to advancing the position of Hispanics in television and film.”

Ferrera said: “It’s an honour to be in such esteemed company. And it’s a thrill to see talented women recognised for their work behind the camera.”

Now, a quick look at Victoria Beckham’s upcoming cameo in the show

Victoria Beckham Ugly Betty Cameo

Aww, looks like the fat suit rumours were just that… rumours!

Now for a little apology, I’m sorry that I have been a bit slow recently updating and adding new content, but if you didn’t already know, I started University three weeks ago which has been a big change for me. As well as leaving home for the first time, making new friends and starting a new course, I have had the flu for the last few days which makes coding the website the last thing on my mind! I am settling in okay now though, so hopefully things will be back to normal very soon. Thanks for sticking with me :)
