Betty a La Mode

I am happy to say that this is coming to you straight from my armchair in my home, as I am back from University for the holidays! This past week has been manic, my leg has almost totally healed but I have had essay upon essay to complete. Then, two assignments, one of which that was due in today and a Mathematics exam this morning. Phew! Anyway…

Sad news, no new Ugly Betty until after Christmas. I know, it’s going to be tough, but at least it leaves us to focus on Christmas shopping! You must remember though, unlike other high profile shows like Heroes or Desperate Housewives, we still have episodes left to view so we can’t be too unhappy. I don’t know about you, but this Writer’s Strike is getting old, FAST. Why not make it a truly Merry Christmas and sort it out guys?

If you, like me, have been quoting  ‘I’m Wilhelmina Slater and I don’t get wet. You’re wearing plastic!’ at EVERY opportunity, feast your eyes on this.  Some lovely soul has uploaded the video onto YouTube so you can watch it over and over and over …

Next time it is raining, it is your duty as an Ugly Betty fan to slip  ‘I’m Wilhelmina Slater and I don’t get wet. You’re wearing plastic!’ into a conversation! No stealing taxis from old ladies though, that’s just mean, hehe.

Thanks to Ugly Betty News, check out this video of Marc in an advert for his upcoming show, ‘Miss America: Reality Check’. It looks great, hopefully some kind sould will upload it onto the internet for us all to see.

Still struggling on what to get as a present for your loved ones? The SeenOn store at ABC offers a wide selection of products which have been featured on the show, from clothes to office furniture! There are some things on there that I really want, [like one of those orange lamps from the Mode offices!] hopefully you’ll find something too!

It has been so long! I am such a bad webmaster, but I have a valid reason, my coursework for my University module was in a while ago which accounted for 80% of my final grade, so sadly, Betty was the last thing on my mind. Then, after I posted the ‘I’m Not Dead’ post last week, I went and dislocated my knee, which means I have been limping around in pain. I am so happy to be back with you, my lovely readers, hehe. A gap this big also means a crap load of news, which is a bummer so a lot of it I will just have to skim past some, otherwise I will be here all day!

Two great episodes, each of them showing the deeper side of Betty. The show has been accused of becoming a bit too light and frothy in the recent series, but these last two episodes can truly silence those critics. The scenes between Claire & Bradford were so touching, more so than the fact that he actually died, haha! And Willi this week, oh my goodness! She is pure evil! I will post a full recap in the episode section, which I will be updating over the next few weeks.

One thing I did notice, is that the ratings for the most recent episode were really low, due to Thankgiving [Happy VERY belated Thanksgiving all you USA’ers!]. This happened last year as well, so you’d think ABC would learn. Especially as they hardly have many episodes left due to the writer’s strike and the fact that there was NO UGLY BETTY THIS WEEK. [I only found out about that a few days before and I was gutted!]. Oh well, it just seems a shame so many people missed such a great episode.

ABC have been updating the official site though with a few new activities and games, including the ‘Face Shifter’. You mix up the tiles and make your own Ugly Betty face, just like the opening sequence. Here’s my try:

Face Shifter

They also have a new game where you can create your own cover with your face on it! Kudos to ABC, because before, the site was looking a bit bare. Click here to play both of the games

In guest star news, Gene Simmons has been signed up to appear, with many people guessing he will be Amanda’s daddy.

“On Monday, December 3rd, I’m shooting Ugly Betty – not her… the show,” quipped Simmons in an update posted on his record company’s website.

The bassist and vocalist kept coy about his cameo. “Can’t tell you just yet who I’m playing or what it’s about,” Simmons wrote, but he added that “it might give you a chuckle”. [Source]

Haha, can’t wait to see him in it!

I just read on Ugly Betty News, that Michael will be hosting his own show, starting on January 4th. Wow! Although I have to admit, I think him teamed with Becki would be the ultimate hosting duo. Here’s the lowdown on the show:

For the first time in history, MISS AMERICA: REALITY CHECK brings all 52 beauty queens together to live under one roof to undo everything they have learned about pageant basics and determine if their smarts, attitudes and looks hold up in contemporary society. Led by host Urie, the girls participate in an intense set of events and challenges designed to prepare them for the finale event, a renewed competition that will redefine what it takes to be Miss America, a relatable and individual ‘it girl’ who can connect with today’s modern woman. [Click for more >>>]

Finally, some new Betty tonight, feels like an age doesn’t it? CHeck out the promo here:

I will post more tomorrow, my leg’s acting up again so I need to go and lie down [I ahve become SUCH an old man since my knee got dislocated haha!]

Thanks for coming back after such a long break, I appreciate it!

Bet You Didn’t See This One Coming…

This is my first mid-week post in ages, I have been so busy with work that this has been impossible up until now. There was quite a lot of news too, do I thought I’d get some out of the way now!

To be honest, I wasn’t that surprised when I heard this. Penelope Cruz is apparently in talks to become the latest addition to the guest list on Ugly Betty. Her and Salma are such good friends, I knew it would only be a matter of time. This is still unconfirmed though, and with the writer’s strike, who knows what’s going to happen!  Penelope is a truly great actress, unlike some of the guest stars *cough*Posh Spice*cough*, so I really hope this is true [Source]

If you hadn’t already heard, ‘Buffy’s Eliza Dushku will be appearing in Episode 209, “Giving Up The Ghost” as a Mode cover girl. I was a big fan of ‘Buffy’ and of Eliza’s character ‘Faith’, so I can’t wait to see her swap kicking vampire butt to working the catwalk!

“Giving Up the Ghost” – A Wilhelmina-induced crisis at Mode finds everyone scrambling to re-create an issue on deadline. Desperate times call for desperate measures, as Daniel and Betty try to break wild child cover girl (Eliza Dushku as Cameron Ashlock) out of rehab for a re-shoot, and Alexis tries to charm the printer (guest star David J. Steinberg) into extending their time. Meanwhile, Betty struggles with an unwelcome (and persistent) visitor who hopes to goad her into making good on a promise, on “Ugly Betty,” THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

The strike is still ongoing and TV Guide’s Ausiello sadly confirms that this means the musical episode, for now, is cancelled.

Question: Please tell me that in the six or seven episodes left of Ugly Betty, the musical episode is included! — Katie
Ausiello: Unfortunately, it’s not. That episode hadn’t been approved yet anyway. It was still in the idea stage when the strike happened.

They better include it in Season 2 [Part 2] or Season 3, if it comes to that!

Another little snippet about the strike reveals that the last three episodes which have been written may not be up to par with the other episodes.

“Ugly Betty” is also continuing production. 13 scripts have been written and it is possible all will be produced, but the writers won’t be available for last-minute rewrites for the final 3, so they may be inferior in quality.

Just get Becki & Michael to wing it, I’m sure it’d be hilarious!

And to end, check out these promo pictures featuring ‘Golden Girl’ Betty White.  These are from Episode 210, ‘Bananas For Betty’ where Willi tries to improve her public image by doing good in the community. It all goes well until she meets poor old Betty. Betty White, that is!

I LOVE Betty White, she is such the stereotypical sweet old lady!

Haha! This picture is hilarious! Willi helping keep the streets of New York clean

I think I’d be as scared as Betty looks here, if Wilhelmina came to visit me in hospital!

Becki Newton Milkshake

I am still recovering from laughing so hard at Amanda’s ‘Milkshake’ performance from this week’s episode. I don’t think I could love her any more than I do now! And I am SO using her dance moves next time I go out clubbing, haha! But aside from that, there were some pretty sad moments in the episode too. To be honest, I had kinda guessed Bradford was going to croak, so I was hardly that surprised when her toppled over at the altar. I was not prepared for Daniel firing Betty though! I love their relationship, and to see Daniel so upset and disappointed in Betty was heartbreaking. My flatmates and I all let out a collective ‘NOOO!’ when he fired her. The episode also included the arrival of Christina’s husband and the announcement that he won’t be around for much longer. I don’t know about him, do you think he’s playing her?

Re-live the episode with the video summary, here

[check back later, YouTube is acting up!]

As the summary doesn’t contain the BEST PART OF THE EPISODE, rewatch Amanda’s Milkshake here

On the subject of Amanda, isn’t she amazing!? It’s no secret that she’s my favourite character so I was ecstatic to learn a while ago that Becki would be cover girl for the UK Esquire Magazine for this month. Thank you to Vicky who emailed me about the cover, here it is for you to enjoy! I have purchased the magazine today so expect scans in the gallery shortly.

Becki Newton Esquire Cover

Frenemies Michael & Becki have James Hayman in for a chat this week in the official podcast. I would have uploaded it sooner but my iTunes messed up and didn’t download it until recently. Doh! Oh well, better late than never

If you haven’t heard already, which would be quite unlikely, the Writer’s Strike in America is in full swing. For those who don’t know what it’s about, the writers are protesting about pay levels to with internet streaming and other media outlets. This means no more scripts will be written for the show until it is all resolved. They currently have 13 written, but once it gets to the 13th episode, it could spell the end of Ugly Betty, Season 2. Awful, isn’t it?! The crazed Ugly Betty fan in me go angry with the writers, but in the end, it’s the network’s fault for not paying them appropriately. Not meaning to worry you, but the last strike took 22 weeks to resolve! I don’t think I can last that long! Of course, not just Ugly Betty is affected, other high profile shows such as Desperate Housewives, Heroes & Grey’s Anatomy have all shut down production. Whatever you make of it, here’s a picture of the cast supporting the strike, complete with placards!

Ugly Betty Writer’s Strike

Ugly Betty has approached some interesting storylines, but this one takes the biscuit!

Rebecca Romijn wants Ugly Betty writers to make her character fat so she can have a baby, and has recently discussed writing a pregnancy into the show.

The blonde beauty – who plays transsexual Alexis Meade in the hit US TV show – is desperate to start a family with her actor husband Jerry O’Connell and they recently had dinner with ‘Ugly Betty’ producer Marco Pennette to discuss writing her pregnancy into the show.

Rebecca, 35, told the USA Today newspaper: “It could be a hysterical pregnancy. There are people who want to be pregnant so badly that they put on weight in that area. Or maybe Alexis could put on a tremendous amount of weight, and I’d wear a fat suit around the pregnancy.” [Click for full story >>>]

Haha! This sounds hilarious! I didn’t know Rebecca & jerry were trying for a baby, good luck to them!

Lindsay Lohan Ugly Betty

Is Ugly Betty going to be getting a bit Freaky? Or perhaps a bit Mean? Superstar Lindsay Lohan is apparently in talks to become the latest star to join the already long list of Ugly Betty guest stars.

Lindsay Lohan is in talks to star in three episodes of hit US show Ugly Betty, it has been reported.

The actress will play a fallen beauty queen who is forced to work at a fast food restaurant after falling behind with her rent.

A show insider told the New York Observer: “Betty tries to help Lindsay’s character by getting her a job at Mode, the fashion magazine where she works on the show.”

Lindsay has had a pretty tough couple of years, so it would be good to see her in a fun, positive role on Ugly Betty. Saying that though, if it is true it may have to wait till Season 3 due to the writer’s strike. This probably also mean the musical episode, which was going to be Valentine’s Day themed has been scrapped until writing starts again. Ugh, I don’t want to think about it, it will just depress me!

Sorry for the lateness of this post, been dealing with an awful cough and spent Thursday travelling back from University! Finally got to watch the episode last night….

Let me start out by saying this, musicals are really not my thing. I enjoyed the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer Musical’ but that’s about it. But now, after seeing ‘Something Wicked…’, I think I am converted! I think I can safely say this was the best episode of the season so far, it really had me gripped from start to finish. And the ending, my mouth was on the floor! Anyway, enough of my whittering, as well as Betty and Henry getting it ooooooooooon, Hilda lied about her job, Marc was embarassed by his boyfriend, Daniel disapproved of Betty’s actions and Wilhelmina had to reshuffle her wedding plans. Was it just me, or did anyone else feel really sorry for good ol’ Willi? Kinda glad Nico isn’t coming back though, her character was pretty boring.

For those who want to refresh their memory, watch the video summary below:

Who ever said Betty was Ugly?! America is covergirl for ‘Marie Claire’ UK this month and she is looking absolutely stunning on the front cover. Have a look at the HQ cover picture below and read a few snippets from her interview. I have just bought my copy [that’s the second girl’s magazine I have bought in a month!], so be sure to pick up yours too! You can find more of the article on the official website, .

America Ferrera Marie Claire Magazine Cover

‘It feels good to be a part of a show that means more to people than just entertainment,’ she says, ‘and which confronts a lot of issues,
like the portrayal of a Latin family with a father struggling for citizenship. Many people kind of see it as a pioneer show for their cause. Ugly Betty addresses these serious issues with humour, and that’s the easiest way to make people listen as opposed to being preachy and
shoving it down their throats.’

Wanna know something MAJOR? The ‘Posh’ episode is less than a week away! Seems like so long ago that news of her appearing started circulating and now it’s finally here. Check out the clip below of Vicky’s ‘acting abilities’ and let me know what you think of it!

I have been in contact with the official ABC store and I have some exciting news for all of you. We are working together to bring you the latest news on updates to the store, right here on Betty a La Mode. Also, we will be running a competition in the following weeks where you can get your hands on some official Betty merchandise! As well as that, the store wants to hear from YOU. What do you want to see in the store? An Ugly Betty teapot? Ugly Betty underwear? Contact me here and I’ll be submitting all of your ideas straight to the store. I myself have mentioned the fact that there is no clothing for male Ugly Betty fans, so hopefully we will see some new mansize additions soon, haha!

In the meantime, why not check out the current items for sale?

You could become the office fashionista with your very own ‘Mode’ bag and travel cup and could complete the look with the ‘Viva La Betty’ T-Shirt. Oh and don’t forget to stick up your official poster, after marking down your next glitzy party on your Ugly Betty calendar. Click the above images to go to their respective pages.

Our sister site, is hotting up in time for Winter, with the new ‘Magazine Wars’ starting. Here’s the description from the site about what it’s all about:

‘Magazine Wars is a new game here at Mode Magazine that allows you to win some amazing prizes, as well as trying to win points for your team (magazine) at the same time! Every few weeks the staff here at Mode Magazine will post a competition within the main forum. These are TEAM events, and you must work within your team in order to make points for your magazine. After each event the team with the most points will be declared the winners and will be given a shiny new prize or more points.’

So whether you’re a whizz at Photoshop, have a knack for writing or just want to join in on all the fun, check it out on the forums.

On the subject of the forums, they are a wonderful place to talk about the latest news reported here with fellow Ugly Betty fans. If you haven’t already, get yourself over there!

Ooooohohoh! Before I go, I FINALLY got my Ugly Betty baseball, adorned with the cast’s signatures. It’s sitting up in my bedroom right now, hehe. It is BETTYFUL! Watch out for the next update for pictures :)

Last night, Episode 5 ‘A League of Their Own’ finally made it’s way onto our screens. Season 2 has really lived up to my expectations and this episode was no different. Hilda’s Cemetery club, the whole Betty / Henry situation and Christina’s underwear fitting session all added up to another great hour of Bettyness! On the subject of Christina, looks like the ball has started rolling with her husband storyline. I hope this means we see a bit more of her on our screens, she always seem to have some of the best lines.

Ashley Jensen Interview

Christina, or should I say Ashley Jensen, was Becki & Michael’s special guest this week for the official podcast. I have sorted out the server and have now updated the podcasts section with ALL the podcasts, from the first to the last. If you’ve never listened to them before, you are really missing out! They are absolutely hilarious, and great for the latest gossip. So….

In the last bit of Ashley related news before I move on, she recently completed a Q&A with Variety magazine, which you can read online here. Here’s a snippet to whet your appetite..

What book do you hope never gets adapted?
“Roget’s Thesauraus,” ‘cos it would be boring.

Last film I saw:
“The Bourne Ultimatum”

Who do you think is the best actor/actress in Hollywood at the moment?
Jeremy Piven and Maggie Gyllenhaall.

I have also updated the Fanmade Video Gallery, [which can be found in the Interact section. Don’t forget to send me links to your favorite videos!] with the AMAZING new video from Ugly Betty video master, Manny! A few months ago he posted the ‘Ugly Betty Mega Mix’ and has now followed it up with ‘Ugly Liar’ featuring Betty & WIlhelmina as Shakira & Beyonce. They are truly great, so be sure to check it out. I am not the only fan though, his original video was enjoyed so much by the Ugly Betty studio, it managed to get him a visit to the set! [Still VERY jealous about that, by the way! Haha!] Manny himself will let you in to ALL the details here, exclusively on Betty a la Mode in the future.

Remember the news that death will be ‘enveloping’ a series regular? Well, after myself and others wondering if this means the actual character or someone related to them, our affiliate TV Guide clears it up for us.

Question: The stench of death is going to envelop someone on Ugly Betty?! Does that mean a main character’s going to die, or is it someone a main character knows? —Caitlin

Ausiello: A series regular will die before the year is out.

Oh. My. Goodness! Who do you think it’ll be? My bets are on Bradford. His story arc has kinda ended and we rarely see him anyway. I think there would be an outrage if Marc got hit by a bus, or Amanda fell off a cliff anyway! We’ll see what happens….

Eric Mabius Nature of the Beast

Did you catch Eric starring in ABC’s ‘Nature of the Beast’ last weekend? Sadly I didn’t [due to living in the UK!], so was it any good? However good it was, it meant Eric got an interview with which is always good to hear! As well as the movie, he speaks quite a lot about Ugly Betty, which you can read here >>> See an excerpt below… Just like Daniel Meade. Sometimes he’s helping Betty or reconciling family relationships, then sometimes he’s… a cad.
Mabius: Which is why I have such a good time playing him. He’s doing his best but he’s falling short in a lot of respects. And I feel like I have a dream job to that extent because I’m not going to be stuck playing a cop looking at gruesome murder scenes for X number of years. I get to do broad comedy, drama, romance and slapstick…. It’s just amazing, it really is. Lately it seems Daniel has turned over a new leaf of responsibility. Is that going to continue?
Mabius: What the writers always achieve is an unrealistic world to a great extent, but the interactions — the people — aren’t. As in life, we take one step forward and 10 steps back. I mean, I think he’s going to grow up a lot but he’s not going to grow up too much.

America has recently been quoted talking about her, and other’s, ‘curvy’ fugures.

America Ferrera, the star of the TV series “Ugly Betty”, says she is curvy but doesn’t like the term being used to describe women in Hollywood.

“There’s just way too much attention placed on the way we look. I think it’s hilarious when people call Jessica Alba or Eva Longoria curvy. Come on – they’re not curvy. I’m curvy,” she was quoted as saying by

She added: “What is normal now? Is it normal to be size zero? Starving yourself is not beautiful. I’ve been really lucky. Playing Betty has prepared me to be exactly who I am and not to change. If I’ve gained a pound or lost a pound, or have food in my teeth, it all works for the show.”

I totally agree, Eva is a beautiful woman, but definitely not curvy. Nice to hear ‘Betty’ has given her such a good outlook on her looks :)

Promo pictures for Episode 9, ‘Giving Up The Ghost’ have been released, and by the looks of things, it’ll be one of the Christmas episodes. ‘Lose The Boss’ was one of my favourite episodes of the first season so hopefully this will be just as good.

I recently bought the UK gossip magazine Heat for the interview with Mark Indelicato, and have uploaded the scans for you to enjoy. These can be found in Betty a La Mode’s new gallery which was created in collaboration with our sister site, As always, please respect the fact that I purchased the magazine and then spent literally hours scanning and editing the images, and not pass them off as your own! Lastly, [Thankfully! This post has taken me hours!] here’s a lovely picture of Becki from the Hollywood Fashion Show. Becki always looks lovely at these kind of events and this is no exception. Click the image to access the full gallery.

Four episodes in, less than twenty to go. Sounds strange after waiting so long for the second season to start! ‘Grin And Bear It’ had some very funny moments in my opinion, Pucquito the talking bear, the Daniel ‘Thumbs Up’ montage & Marc’s realisation that everything is ‘DOOMED’! With all the fun though, came the news that Henry really is the father of Charlie’s baby. After reading an article a few weeks ago saying how predictable Ugly Betty had become, I did NOT see this one coming. Is this the end for Henry & Betty?

Michael Urie & Becki Newton Article

A new interview with Michael & Becki has been published, best ‘frenemies’ from the show. The article describes how has compared the duo to ‘Will & Grace’s Jack & Karen [which I have often thought myself]. It also reveals that the American Music Awards want them to appear “in character” backstage. That sounds great, I hope that comes true! Check out the full article here >>>

Ooh, I forgot to say last time, but in the previous podcast with Eric Mabius, Becki reveals that she is going to be cover girl for the UK magazine ‘Esquire’. I will definately be purchasing a copy, so expect some scans very soon!

TV Guide let a ‘nasty’ bit of information slip out in their recent TV blog, revealing that someone might be for the chop in Ugly Betty!

Question: Ugly Betty scoop please! — Sandy

Ausiello: You smell that? It’s the stench of death, and it’s about to envelop a Betty series regular. And sooner rather than later.

The way that is worded though does not mean that one of the cast regulars is going to die, it may be someone close to them. Who could it be?

More promo pictures have been released, this time for Episode 8, ‘I See Me, I.C.U’

Haha! Looks like another great episode to look forward to!

Kirstie Allie & John Travolta have both been rumoured to appear on the show…

It is reported that Kirstie Alley is trying to persuade her ‘Look Who’s Talking’ co-star John Travolta to join her in an upcoming episode of ‘Ugly Betty’.

Variety reports that Alley has been linked to an ‘Ugly Betty’ guest role as a no-nonsense modelling agent who doesn’t hold back when dealing with her young clients.

And ‘Golden Girl’ Betty White has been confirmed! This is not the first time Betty has been to Ugly Betty land, as in April she appeared as our Betty in ‘Ugly Betty White’ for the TV Land Awards! [So many Betty’s in one sentence!] Have a look at this great picture:

Ugly Betty White

Sounds good, the way this is going, they’ll be a new guest star every week!

Posh Spice has been telling the UK press about what a great time she had filming Ugly Betty. She also lets slip about her big entrance, check it out:

“It was the most fun ever,” she’s quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying.

“The director just told me to play myself. I said, ‘The real me or the Posh me?’ He said, ‘I want the Posh one’, so I just played to it.

“Wilhelmina’s standing there in her wedding dress and I burst through a curtain shouting, ‘It’s major!’ My dress is so much more fabulous than hers – the bridesmaid has upstaged her outfit. You should see the look on her face. It was a brilliant thing to do.”

I think that’s it for now, check back later for more updates!
